As our software platform Rosetta becomes increasingly embedded into our clients' critical business processes, we are holding it to the highest standards of reliability, resilience, security and performance. Therefore, we are creating a dedicated Platform Operations team and are pleased that James will assume the leadership of that team.
Congratulations, James! We’re excited to see all the great things you’ll accomplish. Curious about James’ journey and his day-to-day, read more below.
Tell us a bit about yourself and your role at REGnosys
I started my career, through the academia route and gained a PhD in Computer Science from Kingston University. The work was investigating the storage and retrieval of CCTV-derived knowledge. So reidentification of pedestrians was possible we used a Bayesian measurement - a precursor to current AI techniques
I then moved to the small business sector, working as a user interface developer. My role gradually morphed into that of a full stack developer, which means taking on more of the company’s business logic and infrastructure development.
In other words – I started at the front and ended at the back! I enjoy working with computers and within development teams. In June 2020, I joined the team at REGnosys, where I manage the DevOps side of the organisation but I also help support the regular development activities of the firm.
Why did you choose to work at REGnosys?
I enjoy the small company culture. I can get things done and have a direct line of communication to all parties. REGnosys was created by talented individuals and has evolved into a wider team made up of friendly like-minded people. Since joining, I have been given the opportunity to grow here which I really appreciate, and I quite like the technology stack too.
A day in the life: what is your typical working day like?
Whether at home or the office, the day starts with a team meeting with the entire company or what we refer to as the scrum. We discuss any pertinent issues and react quickly if necessary.
The nature of the business means no one day is the same and the tasks vary. This includes designing and developing new features, supporting our product and team, bug fixing, testing, code and security reviews, documentation, team management release management.
What is a cool project that you are working on now?
We are currently working on a significant upgrade of our technology stack by introducing a new data storage layer. This is going to make a real impact. I am managing the project and seeing it through from design and implementation to rollout. The project will make effective use of automation to enhance reliability and security.
REGnosys in 5 years: where do you see yourself and the company then?
I hope REGnosys continues its growth and becomes a significant player in the sector. I would love to play my part in providing the right stewardship and deciding on the right technology choices so that our infrastructure continues to support this growth. We will need a solid platform that can scale and realise our product design aspirations.
